External hardrive

I back up on an external hardrive. Do I still need recovery disks? HP laptop

Elaborate a bit please... What are you backing up? If you're making images of your harddrive, you'd probably be fine without the restore disks. If you're just copying some files like documents or pictures...well you won't have an OS to restore should something happen
