External HD as a Server?

Hey gang,

I have a Dell Inspiron desktop running as my office server. It has 4 other desktops that are networked to it and it works fine. I don't use it, it just functions as a server for files and the like.

I'm looking to condense the whole setup and use a simpler type of server.

Would an external hard drive function the same way as a desktop computer?

The easiest way to do this (If I understand your needs) is to map a network drive. This will allow you to connect all of your computers to the external hard drive to pull data. Probably not the fastest way to transfer the data, but it works!
