External HD issues

Whenever I boot up or re-start my computer, my external HD doesn't get recognized. There's nothing wrong w/ the external, as it worked great on my old laptop. Ever since I got my new laptop though I have to re-install the software after I boot up or re-start my computer. Once I re-install the software, it works fine; that is until I have to boot up or re-start. My external connects via USB. I'm sure this is an easy fix, but I just don't know how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
 
do you have it plugged in when you turn it on? or do you plug it in when its loaded windows? I would advise the plugging it in when windows has loaded if you dont already.
 
My external HD is plugged in and on when I boot up or re-start. That's what I did w/ my old computer and it worked fine.
 
ive got an external HD and i only plug it in one of the usb connections when windows has fully loaded otherwise if i plug it in then boot up my computer it hangs on the bios screen, dunno y just does
