External HD stopped working...

It was working just fine, then suddenly, the computer is asking to install the driver, which I never had to, and for some strange reason it can't be installed, only uninstalled. lol
It's not being showed on 'my computer' anymore
and it's being showed up as 'not identified' on that manager thing.

It can't be formated because I got a lot of files that can't be lost, and i'm using windows vista ultimate.

Please help D=
 
try hooking it up to another pc. if you get the same error then remove the drive from the external case and hook up the drive internally. you may have to go into bios to change the boot order incase your mobo likes playing games with you. perhaps the board in the case got fried... which is common
 
Plug that external HDD in your computer and then boot from the CD which contains Ubuntu Linux 9.04 32-bit edition operating system on it.After the CD is booted,choose the language "English" and after that choose "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer".Wait until the Ubuntu fully loads and after the Ubuntu has been fully loaded,go to "Places" -> "Computer" and there find your external HDD and open it and copy ALL the files from it on your internal HDD which is inside of your computer.

Ok, just connected the HD directly to the pc. Should I configure something? Because it's not showing up on 'My Computer'. (it's a SATA)

Now I'm gonna try the Linux way.

No, it's not recognized in bios, it says I do have a slave drive though.

and it doesn't have a letter on disk management, it's not even showed there.

Well... Since i dont want to open my pc again, I just left the HDD plugged in there

And on that first windows of the installation, only the C: drive is shown, and it doesn't have the option to "Try without any change..."

LoL that option "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer" is NOT the part of the Windows operating system.Its from the Linux Ubuntu operating system.It looks like this:

You MUST download the ISO image file of the Ubuntu 9.04 and burn it to your CD using programs like Power ISO 4.0 and then boot from that CD and THEN select that option "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer".And after the Ubuntu is FULLY loaded and you see its desktop,go to "Places->Computer" and there find your USB hard disk drive.

NOTE: Be sure to download the 32-bit editon of the Ubuntu 9.04,NOT the 64-bit editon.Just click on the first link called "Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Alternate i386 (ISO)" and download that.Thats the 32-bit edition...
