External HD won't eject

When I try to remove my external HD by using Saftly Remove Hardware, I get the warning pop-up "Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device". In the box it reads "the device generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later". Everything is closed and over an hour has gone by. Everytime I try to eject it I get the warning. I hate to just turn it off without properly ejeting the HD. It's a Western Digital My Book external HD. Any help would be appretiated.
 
Not sure what 2.5 or 3.5 is. I don't know what it is doing because all files and programs aren't running and it's been over an hour and still won't eject. How can I tell if it's doing something?
 
2.5 or 3.5 is the size of the hard drive. If you have to, you can just unplug it, however this could cause a loss of information, and isn't good for the hard drive.
