External hdd mac to PC problems?

I'm new, this is my first post and I am desperate. PLEASE help me, if there is a solution as I'm not really that great when it gets to the deep technical parts of computers...

Backstory... My wife bought a mac, one of the all-in-one jobs with everything built into the monitor. Nice machine, did all we needed it to do. She backed everything up onto an external hard drive, had it set to automatically do that once a week as she was always taking pictures, downloading music, etc. and didn't want to lose the info or crowd the built in mac hdd. She passed away last November. My house got broken into last month and they stole the mac but left the external hdd. I can't afford to splurge on a new mac (and enjoy PC more anyway) so I'm trying to transfer the contents of the external hard drive to my laptop. It's a new(er) windows 7 machine and it recognizes that there is an external hard drive present but it doesn't, to the best of my knowledge, give me any options to even open it to view the files. When I go to my computer and click on the icon for the ext hdd it doesn't open up the contents but it brings up the "properties" of the hdd and that's it. All of our wedding and honeymoon pics, not to mention all the others she took, are on there, along with our entire iTunes library. The music I don't care about but I really need to find a way to get all of our pics back. Please help.

Sorry if this has been covered already, I'm losing my patience. Thank you for your help.

Sorry for your loss. My condolences.

Anyway, I think your best bet is to get a Linux LiveCD ISO and put it on either a flash drive or a CD, then boot. It should be able to access the HD, then you can copy the files to your Windows drive.
