External HDD Problem

I have a 160gb usb hard drive. It has been fantastic since i got it but I have started having trouble with it. It says I still have 29gb free space on it but when U try to transfer over files it says that there is not enough room. the file I am trying to transfer is under 5g so there should be no problem, does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?
 
What file system? If it's formatted as FAT32, it can't handle files bigger than 4GB. I had the same problem on my external HDD, formatted as FAT32, it had 10+ GBs of free space but when I tried to copy a large DVD image on it it would say there wasn't enough free space left there... if it's NTFS, that can't be it.
