I'm trying to copy an 8 GB file to an external HDD with 16 GB of free space... When I try to copy it, it says there is no more free space and if I want to free some... 16 GBs free space should be plenty to copy an 8GB file...

what file system is the external drive mounted in FAT32 or NTFS..?

It's FAT32... I'm transferring from NTFS...

The maximum file size that any FAT32 disk can support is 4Gb, bad luck

if it is an image file then u can remake the image and use alcohol to split the image

Not what you wanted to hear then.... Consider reformatting this networked drive to NTFS, it shoud be anyway. unless its really old.... or poorly configured/setup.... or do as otheres suggested, slpit the file and out it on 2 x 2Gb files....
