External keeps disconnecting.

I just built a new computer, and I'm having a problem with my external hard drive. It is a 1tb portal WD USB 3.0 drive. I plug it in and start transfering, and it will transfer fine for a few minutes, then it just disconnects, and a pop-up says unregonized device, and that the last device I have plugged in has malfunctioned.

It does this with all my USB ports, and I tried a separate USB 3.0 hard drive, and it works fine. It started this with the new build, never did this with my old computer. I can't hook it up to old one because I pulled some parts out of it.

Is my hard drive on it's way out the door or is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Here is the new computer, don't know if it matters or not.
Corsair Carbide 300r
MSI Z87-G45
i5-4570s
Radeon HD 7850 2gb
Vengeance 8gb DDR3 (2x4gb)
liteon Ihas 324B
Seagate Barracuda 3tb
Corsair TX650w

Thanks

It could be the actual case causing the problem. Or possibly cable. I had to throw away a usb mouse yesterday because it was doing basically the same thing. You could try taking the hard drive out of the case and hook it up with a regular sata power and data cable and see what happens.

Hmmm, I was thinking that could be a possibility. That would defeat the purpose of the portable hard drive, but I guess it is better than it not working. I will try it when I get home and post i it works.

well thats not an option. Took it apart, figuring there would be some sort of adapter that hooks to the hard drive, and there isn't even a sata port. Just a usb 3.0 port.
