Heya,
Very sadly my laptop has decided to die I have called the warrenty people and they will take it back and fix/replace which is great. :D

However I have an enormous amount of work and irreplaceable files i have bought an IDE cable that allows me to plug my laptops 2.5" HDD into my Desktop machine. Ive hooked it all up and i can access the drive

However my main user account that was on my laptop was password protected, and if i try to access that users documents and settings i get an access denied message, i have tried through CMD but i had no luck :(

I really need to save this data and I'm hugely grateful for any help you can give me :)

no, if an account has a password, then even the admins cant look at it. or at least, ive never been able too.

EDIT: how strange, its never worked before, but i just tested it, and it worked

Yeah with an admin account I can get into any folder I want (not to mention I can remove the password on a passworded account without knowing what it is). Some guy brought his PC in for servicing at my last job and he had passworded his computer so I created my own and removed his password

That security tab feature is working very nicely :) Im going through the laptop HDD, its working but its a very slow process i have to change permissions on every file and folder, is there a way you can change everything in a users folder to full rights to everyone?

Theres a check box called "replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
(You have top change the ownership before you can change the permissions

How well does that work if the Admin account has EFS say, in WXP? (especially when the passwords are locked in "c:\WINDOWS\system32\config\sam")
