extracting subtitles

Does anyone know of a good program/way of extracting subtitles from avi/mkv files?

there should be a seperate file for the subtitles. If there isn;t then its possible they are mixed into the image making it impossible to extract (as they are just a picture)

subrip and the like are an option, but they dont work well at converting the image to text.

The avis　I'm working with don't have separate files for the subtitles, so I guess they're burned in. I don't want to remove the subtitles, I was just trying to work around a problem wherein the subtitles go beyond the screen when I convert the files to SVCD/DVD. And I thought it would be nice to use the subtitle on/off feature...

Maybe I should post the original problem in a new thread.
