Hello

I have extremely slow speeds on my fast adsl 2 + telstra broadband plan.

I took the ookla speed test and i only manage 2mbps download and 0.7 mbps upload, my ping is 10.
These tests were taken with my computer hooked up via ethernet with no one else connected to the internet and nothing running in the back ground.

My computer is very powerful so it wouldnt be the cause of the problem.

My router is the Thomson TG782T. Im located 2.5km from the nearest exchange, with an estimated cable length of 3.5kms.

Did anyone know why my speed is so slow, how should i go about finding the cause of the problem ?

thanks in advance.

It could be many things. Perhaps a bad drop from your house to the phone tap. Ingress/egress can play a roll on the line. What is the advertised speed from you ISP?

You could go to http://www.dslreports.com/ and use their smokeping tool. You just have to allow pings in your router. If you see high pings to your line I suspect the line.

What happens if you plug directly to the modem instead of the router? Or is this a combo unit?

thanks for the input much appreciated.

the advertised speed is 30mbps, this is a combo unit.

How do i go about allowing pings in my router.

i did get the following stats, ns if they help.

DSL Connection

Link Information

Uptime: 0 days, 0:13:57

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 7.34 / 27.96

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.5 / 1.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 27.0 / 49.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.5 / 6.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / GSPN

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 11 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 873 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 1 / 0

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 1 / 147

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 42

That SNR is pretty low.

You could try another phone cable or wall jack to eliminate local type of issues.

Yesterday i disconnected the filter and connected the router directly to the wall socket, still no change in speed.

Its a limitation of the copper wire and the distance from the exchange. If you ring Telstra, they'll check it an possible change some settings. Call Telstra then come back.

okay so i called up telstra today, they ran some tests on my line and they apparently reset a few things. still no change in the speed. They are going to call me back tomorrow after they monitor my line. The guy i was speaking to thought that maybe my router could be causing the slow speed as it is a few years old. What do you guys think about that ? my router never drops out and appears to me that its working fine.

will see what they have to say tomorrow, do these routers usually play up often, i never suffer any drop outs using it. Seems to be working fine for me.

Okay so a called telstra again today and the guy I spoke with is certain the problem is my router/modem, also as my router is out of warranty they he refused to send me a replacement. So now which router do you think is best for me, the guy recommended the tg 797.

An easy way to test this is to disconnect your router, and connect your computer directly to the modem. Personally, I would not use the router from the ISP, I would get the modem through them but purchase my own wireless router that I can upgrade easily without needing to contact the ISP.

im using a router/modem ATM, going to see if a friend has a spare modem i could borrow just to test. Dont want to go out and buy a new router/modem and still have slow speeds.

You can't simply swap modems, you will most likely need to talk to your ISP first. This is why it's good to get just the modem from the ISP, and get a separate, dedicated wireless router.

A new modem needs to be registered with your ISP. A router doesn't.

While that's true for cable, you can swap around pretty much any modem for DSL. The method of access shifts over to PPPoE so you just need to configure your credentials on the layer 3 device.

thanks everyone for the input, i got a modem from a friend connected it up, entered a few details i got from my isp many years ago and worked fine.Ran a speed test and net was quicker much quicker, i achieved about a 5mbps download compared with the 2mbps i had with the old modem.
