when u turn on my friends computer it says primary master hard disk S.M.A.R.T. statas bad replace hard drive failure maybe imminent.
Is there anything I can do to save her hard drive? What would cause that?
also in the bios there's an opption to "reset configuration data" besides "clearing extended system configuration data" what does that do?
any help or ideas you can give would be appriciated.
thx,
Heidi

It means the hard drives self monitoring system is predicting the the primary drive is going to fail. The safest thing to do is backup all the data on it and get a new drive.

SMART isn't always accurate but if there's anything on the drive they absolutely can't lose I'd back it up sooner rather than later.

You can try pulling the hard drive out and plugging it into another computer, pull out all your important stuff first then everything/anything else. And don't wait to see what happens/ignore it... my WD died as soon as the message came up. It's equivalent to alarms ringing and red lights flashing and people running around in panic... and then you notice that you're knee-deep in rising water and there's no way out, and then the lights go out and... well, you get the idea.

Like said try to hook up the hdd and get inmprontant files off. Other then that, your HDD is broken.

I was just told that if you stick it into the freezer until it is frozen solid, then you MAY be able to get a fw min. run time. But the HDD needs to stay in there for several hours.

It's not broken yet. It's saying it will be soon. I have heard the freezing thing works but don't do that until the drive doesn't work anymore and you absolutely need to get somethign off of it.

thank for all the help. my friend said there's not realy anything she can't live with out. So basical there is no fix she just has to get new hdd.
