Counterfeit Intel CPUs (has been confirmed by Intel)

I just read about this, so I imagine that there are some here who haven't heard about this yet either.

Newegg's official statement: Newegg Releases Statement Regarding Fake Processors - overclockers.com
The distributors response: Ipex Infotech Releases Statement Regarding Fake Newegg i7 CPUs - overclockers.com

Intel confirms the CPUs are counterfeit

This is what Intel's Dan Snyder has passed along this morning:

"Intel is getting samples to inspect and until then we can say that everything in the package appears fake. Some of the photos of the processor look like it is a casting and not even a real processor of any kind. Newegg has moved quickly to replace the suspect units."

Then Intel came back to me 5 minutes later with a message that was a bit more of a hardened position.

"Also, to be 100% clear, these are not any type of Intel demo unit or sample and we never saw or had anything to do with them until they surfaced in web photos."

Counterfeit Intel CPU Saga Comes to a Close

Following is Newegg.com's official statement reguarding the Intel shipping story:

"Newegg is currently conducting a thorough investigation surrounding recent shipments of questionable Intel Core i7-920 CPUs purchased from Newegg.com.

Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us "demo units." We have since come to discover the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier. Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7-920 CPUs in question."

lol, saw pics of a fake one over at OCN before, it was like a bad action figure with the arms on backwards :P

LOL Yeah I saw some guys crying over this, the cpu coolers look like some sort of cake or the cheese that Wallis and Gromit eat :D Good old Wensleydale HAHA

What a joke tho, bet this is purely people working at newegg and stealing cpu's via the courier or sticking them you know where....

Man I would shoot through multiple levels of pissed if I had this happen to me :P

Still funny because it didn't happen to me!

Funny, but what a load of BS. If he wasn't the one faking, maybe he was dooped by a local buddy or somebody he had been bragging too about ordering an I7....so his buddy made the fake and waited for UPS to drop the box off so he could snag it and replace it with the fake. That would be a pretty mean practical joke.

Nah there are reports of others having the same surprise. Besides the friend unless he is a thief would have broken the prank by now :P

Nope not an inside man, Newegg just posted a statement on facebook saying that their supplier had something to do with it.

Newegg’s top priority is to proactively reach out to all customers who may have been affected to ensure their absolute satisfaction. We have already sent out a number of replacement units and are doing everything in our power to resolve the matter promptly and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers.

We have always taken pride in providing an exceptional experience for each customer, and we apologize for any inconvenience to our valued customers. We take matters like this extremely seriously, and are working in close cooperation with Intel and the appropriate law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident.

D&H was getting pretty angry with [H]ardOCP about it, and were sending out C&D notices to lots of forums because of threads. Kinda suprising that newegg doesnt get cpu's directly from intel and instead use distributors though.

I bet the guys over at Newegg shot through the roof of the pissed institution when they found out about this stunt from Ipex. :D

Doesn't seem like something they could have dreamed of getting away with considering how badly "replicated" it is. Maybe they were paid to try to hurt newegg's reputation?

From what I can tell, they were made to replicate the weight, box contents rattle sound, and the box itself. They appear to have succeeded quite well as they made it all the way to the consumer. They knew people would find out eventually, and I'm sure they finalized their cover up plans before they switched them out. It may be difficult to track down the actual perpetrators now.

I think Newegg reviewed their stock and found some there that hadn't yet been sent to customers, so it seems related to the distribution center in some way.

Well of course they would shift blame whether it was or not LOL. How do they really know?

And I am also surprised that newegg doesn't buy from intel directly, thats weird with the quantity they move.
