Fan question

Okay, im ordering new computer parts very soon, and im putting it together myself, and i have chosen the CoolerMaster HAF 932 case, and im planning on using 8 fans, and i wonder how the fans are connected.

Do they get power from the motherboard(if so what are the connections called) or do they get power from the PSU?

Fans can either be connected to the motherboard via a 3 pin connector or directly to the power supply via a 4 pin molex connector. Generally it's better to connect fans to the motherboard as you can then monitor its rpm and such but I doubt any motherboards going to have 8 fan headers. When you buy the fans make sure they have both the 3-pin connector AND the molex connector.

On a side note, why do you need so many fans?

Well i could always change the 4x 120mm on the side panel with a 230 and do the same on the 2 on top.
The 4x 120mm on the side panel was mostly because of the red LEDs.

it is better to have more fans in your pc because it will keep your computer cool, it is better that you should buy fans with both pins.

More fans the better isn't always the case. Having the right fans blowing in the right places often produces better results than having fans everywhere. Plus, the more fans you have the louder your computer gets.

Okay drop those 8 fans, ill go with the stock fans, 230 at front, 230 side window, 230 top and a 140 at the back, thats 4 fans which ill connect to the motherboard using 3 pin, i only have 2 3 pin fans ports on the MOBO so ill use 2 splitters, then ill hav all 4 fans connected using 3-pin ;)

don't connect more than 1 fan to each motherboard connector, you can very easily put too much current through it which can (and probably will) damage the motherboard.

If you don't have enough slots, get molex to fan pin adapter so you can plug the fans straight into the power supply

i never know that

The max you can put through each header is usually ~1.5-2A.

For most fans, that isn't a problem, for instance a Scythe slipstream pulls at most just over 0.5A, however, if you get the high performance fans, some of them pull way over 2A.

I personally wouldn't risk it though unless I knew the power draw of the fan and I knew the max current that can be put through the header
