fan running

have a hp a610uk computer which every now and again gives of a whirling noise. having taken lid of have found fan on top of pc is constantly running. after 20 mins it may stop for a while then restart. it may do this for several hours then stop for rest of day.
the ventalation is ok as been the same for 2 years. any ideas????

an amendment...fan runs constantly but appears to "speed up" causing louder noise then after a while (maybe 20 mins) quietens back down

If this is different than it used to be, there's probably something running in the background causing it to head up more quickly. You may wish to run some spyware scanners(Adaware, Spybot), virus scanners(perhaps AVG Free), and Hijackthis, posting the log here. You may also want to check that the fan or heatsink's not very dusty.

probably use a thermal fan pluged into the 4 pin and with q fan enabled in the bios.
