fan speed out of whack?

I just purchased an ATI Radeon X700 Pro PCI-E and the fan goes right to 100% whenever there is any 3d graphics present. It's quite loud, and I thought fan speed was supposed to be controlled by temperature? Is there a way to make this quieter?

well that's probably because once you open a 3d application your card immedietly heats up. You can download atitools which allows you to customize the fan control.

I see. I screwed around with ATI tools and tweaked it so that it's quieter while not in games.

Beware though, because while its quiter, the card will get hotter

I have the same card, and every once in a while it will get loud. Still I think my card might be overheating, so I suggest you leave it as is.

whats a good running temerature for running games in? At what temp does the card get too hot? Mine maxes out at 78C when playing Oblivion. This is with it overclocked to 465/501 mhz.
