Fast External HD Seagate

Hey everyone,

I am looking into buying an external HD; however there are so many models and many different opinions on each drive.

I am concerned about the speed of watching videos directly from the drive. Since my laptop has USB 2.0 I am somewhat limited so I’m looking for minimum 7200RPM. I am looking toward Seagate since Western Digital mostly offers 5400 RPM and lots of stories about their drives failing.

So far I picked this drive: Seagate FreeAgent Desk 2TB USB2.0 External Hard Drive (ST320005FDB2E1-RK)

Anyone have any feedback about this drive or Seagate in general? Or maybe another recommendation entirely?

Thanks! Appreciate it.

Any USB drive is going to be limited to about 33MB/s. Regardless if it's 7200 or 5200, the actual performance will be much the same. But regardless of that, I would stay away from Western Digitals. Their external drives have had very high failure rates as of recently. As for seagate, as long as it's not a 7200.11 in the case, it should be fine.

Hey, thanks for the reply. The info / reviews on that drive is limited. All I could find was 7200.1 for the drive I mentioned. Anyone know if that is reliable. The 7200.11 seems to be on the Seagate Barracuda drives.

How is the read speed on the USB 2.0? If I’m relying on it as my hard drive especially for any video content since it's filling up my laptop will I be disappointed?

Thanks.

have you thought about a nas external drive?

you can hook it up to your router and hide it away accessing it on a network, i have one and its good performance via lan
