faster external hard drive transfer?

is there a fast external hard drive where the transfer doesn't take forever? And the speed is slow because they use a USB transfer or is the transfer just slow in general for some reason?
thanks I was just wondering as I'm backing up my computer right now.

More than likely just because of the usb connection, which is pretty slow. If you have available esata ports i would look into an esata external hard drive.

what's a esata port? if so is there other faster connections because I feel it's the USB connection because I believe firewire is faster or I heard it's much faster than USB. Are those the only two types of connections for external hard drives? Do I have to buy a esata port or something? is that the fastest or is there a faster external hard drive connection? thanks

you can get external hard drives that have 2 usb connectors to effectively double the speed of transfer.

these are the hard drives, i got one the other day and man they are fast!!

You can get firewire but the speed difference wont be that noticable, atleast whenever i transfer stuff with firewire i don't see a huge advantage over USB.

e-sata is the same as an external sata port, the hard drive(s) in your computer will run off a SATA connector, e-SATA is simply one of these connectors but outside.

I think you probably can get converters, USB->e-SATA for example, but the speed will be the exact same because it is going through a USB port still. Only motherboards from the past couple of years will have them, and even then only the performance ones as far as i can tell.

What is the setup are you currently running?

intel pentium 4 CPU 1400 MHz 1.4 GHz, 512 RAM

windows XP

I just want to know of a faster transfer connection or type of external hard drive because the USB ones are pretty slow. It takes almost the whole day to transfer 5 vidoes. although I guess they are big.
