Yet again, I'm working on my brothers older IBM ThinkPad T41 running XP-SP3.
He called me over and told me his internet wasn't working. I restarted the router first and foremost, and rebooted the laptop. When I pulled up the selection screen for the wireless networks, the window displayed "No Networks in Range/Can't find any networks" or something a long those lines. I found this odd because he lived in an Apt. complex. Anyhow, I pulled out my phone, found his network being broadcast (along with about 10 others). Connected to it on my phone, ran a check, everything worked. Then we connected to the network on his x-box360, wirelessly, ran a check, everything worked.
So I narrowed it down to the laptop. I turned off and on the radio signal, but still found no networks. I noticed when I was turning off and on the signal, the wireless indicator light was turned off completely. I then disabled the driver from Device Manager, restarted it and re installed the driver. I found out, or from what it seems, that the wrong driver was installed on the NIC. I re installed the right driver, restarted it and the wireless indicator light came on immediately. Tried to find a wireless network, and still nothing. So then I narrowed it down to a faulty NIC.
-I pinged 127.0.0.1 and got 4 packets back successfully, which makes it seem like it's not the NIC.
-Ipconfig /all : "Ethernet Adapter Wireless Connection: Media Disconnected"
-I tried plugging it directly into the router, but it wouldn't connect to the internet even then.
I told him I'd have to take it home and look at it. I took it home, turned it on, and connected to my network fine. Rebooted it a few times, everything worked fine. It found my wifi immediately. Brought it back to his house, found his network just fine. Rebooted it, and now it's back to the same thing it was doing. Can't detect any wifi signals.
Excuse my french, but what the hell is wrong with this thing?
