Few questions.

My first build should be done in a day or two but I'm still curious about a few things. I work at a pc shop and my boss has been doing things for 18 years, but sometimes its just hard to trust him to I'm asking here.

1. Is a 5900rpm 1TB, 32mb cache hard drive better then a 320gb 7200 rpm 16mb cache HD?

2. Is playing games at full 1080p going to make a noticeable graphics difference, or just kill fps.

3. Will overclocking 1600mhz ddr3 RAM make any difference? Not benchmarking just for gaming.

4. I've been told my new pc even when its done being broke in and overclocked won't run Crysis maxed, is it true?

5. Does 64bit really have that many problems with games?

Specs
i7 960-Going to be OC just after its broken in.
EVGA GTX 295-also OC
6GB DDR3 RAM-possible OC????
As of know that 1TB HD
Windows 7 64bit

you will be very happy with that computer:D

1. Is a 5900rpm 1TB, 32mb cache hard drive better then a 320gb 7200 rpm 16mb cache HD? Yes and no but mostly no. It has more storage but is slower. You will notice a diff. between a 5900 and 7200 rpm drive.

2. Is playing games at full 1080p going to make a noticeable graphics difference, or just kill fps. Depends on the GPU. With a 295 you should be fine.

3. Will overclocking 1600mhz ddr3 RAM make any difference? Not benchmarking just for gaming. Not sure somebody else has to answer but I would think it would be faster.

4. I've been told my new pc even when its done being broke in and overclocked won't run Crysis maxed, is it true? That is a false statement. Crysis is a very demanding game but you should be just fine so long as you get a 7200rpm drive. I would start with a 320 or 500gb drive and get more of them later if needed. Better to have a small drive fail and lose some stuff than have a big drive fail and lose all of it.

5. Does 64bit really have that many problems with games? Not that I know of. I was under the impression that you could run programs in a 32bit "mode" so to speak but again that is another persons question to answer.

Specs
i7 960-Going to be OC just after its broken in.
EVGA GTX 295-also OC
6GB DDR3 RAM-possible OC????
320 or 500 gb WD caviar black or similar seagate drive
Windows 7 64bit

Sorry I could not answer everything but good luck on the build.

You really want a 295? why not a 5870? they perform the same, but the 5870 will have less heat and power consumption. Or you can wait until the fermi cards are released, but who knows how long that will be...

Nvidia better lift their game, they are falling behind right now.

I would not risk it, so get a 7200rpm drive. Crysis is horribly riddled with bugs and leaks. even a massive system will get lag in it if played long enough (a few hours or more)but more power helps a lot. It's mainly GPU intensive but you won't want to skimp out on a CPU and RAM (which you aren't)

Why did you mention a Hard drive for Crysis? A slow HD won't effect your fps, only make loading screens a few seconds longer. My opinion is that that the slower HD would be better since it has a larger cache. Anymore opinions?

lol I try hard not to start fanboy wars but in the end Nvidia always wins, plus I bought a 295 awhile ago. This Hard drive thing is confusing the hell out of me. At my shop 4 guys said a 7200rpm HD wouldn't be any different from a 5900.

Fair enough :D

but i'm no fanboy okay?

you WILL notice an improvement if you go from a 5900rpm to 7200rpm drive. FPS will be affected, but not as big as of an impact as a new GPU or CPU. There won't be as many slowdowns at the beginning of a level ar as soon as the game loads up or whatever. plus it helps with general system performance.

Almost all games now run fine on 64-bit. the thing i run into with problems is CSS. It crashes when you exit the game. nothing serious. Most games now also have 32bit and 64bit binaries.

As for 1080p, i can't say, i don't have experience with HDTV's or monitors.

1600mhz memory is plenty fast already and will be for a good few years, but go ahead and overclock if you want.

1. 320gb 7200 rpm 16mb cache HD as they are a little older technology which means more stable. Instead of 320GB get 500GB - nearly the same amount of money.

2. Is playing games at full 1080p going to make a noticeable graphics difference, or just kill fps It all depends on graphic card you are going to get with your computer.

3. Will overclocking 1600mhz ddr3 RAM make any difference? The answer is no. Getting will be enough.

4. I've been told my new pc even when its done being broke in and overclocked won't run Crysis maxed, is it true? It will run Crysis and it should come up to maximum details in the game.

5. Does 64bit really have that many problems with games? As you know laready, 32-bit system is designed for gaming. Some games (such as Call of Duty: World at War) do not run in 64-bit systems, but most games should.

Ok thanks for the suggestions, I'm all set up but my HD is still the slowest component. As much as I trust you guys I've asked my boss who's been gaming and repairing comps for 17 years and he said that a 5900rpm HD won't affect fps at all, and that the double cache will make up for any slowdown as it is. Anyone agree?

Still open to what you guys think about the HD speed. I'm super confused because I've had 5 people who work with me all say only my loading times will be effected, then some of you say different. Appreciate the help.

Tried out Crysis, with everything maxed 1600x1050 res and 2xaa, didn't record my fps but i saw 0 lag and 0 studder. loading times seem fine to me. Could i not be seeing the effects because of I have so much RAM?

That is a very nice build. I wouldnt worry about the HD speed because it only affects load times and if you are that concerned with load times, i would get an SSD but that costs more and I dont want you to be thinking about your HD when you need to be concerned with your overall computer performance. Your CPU, GPU, and RAM will dictate how fast your games run. At the same time, dont be having so many applications up because that will eat up your RAM and slow down your computer. Just some things to think about.

Thanks for the reply, I normally keep my systems pretty clean, especially when running a game. I tried a program called gamebooster on my old rig, it was supose to close non needed windows programs when u play a game. Anyone try it, does it work?

for amd systems its called AMD fusion. it works pretty good, boosted my 3dmark score about 300 points

With your current computer you wont need it because you can overclock your processor. Not sure how good your cooling is but with your i7 960 you could get pretty high in ghz but the higher you go, the more your computer heats up. Thats why I say you dont need any boosters if you can overclock your cpu. Not necessary at all. Also you already have a fast enough computer so no need to use any gaming boosters.

Ok one more question why is cpuz showing my ram as this PC3-8500F (533 MHz)- from google that ram doesnt even exist with my brand-Patriot Viper
Saw a few other people getting the same thing. And the reason stuff isnt overclocked is because I wanted my comp home for the weekend then when i go back to work everything will be OCed. Also my cpu fan is a shitty stock one because my good one is being shipped still. My case is a antec 900 if that matters for cooling.

Also any reason why in order to get 1920x1080 res for a game option, i have to set that as my screen res out of game?
