File Compression questions

The Android OS in my smartphone has the ability to compress files to free up space so before doing that, would like to know if that could mess up my files or affect my phone in any other undesired way?
 
It shouldn't mess anything up, you will get slower file access though because they need to be decompressed before they can be used.
