file compression

Hello. I would like to find out how to compress files down in size. I have several dvd/mpeg files (say about 1 gig each). I would like to compress these so that I can save them onto dvd-rw.
Does the compression reduce the size of the file. I have installed both Winzip 10.0 and winrar. Both programs say that the file has been compressed, but when I click on properties, the size of the file is the same as before.
Any suggestions.
Many Thanx

Some things cannot be compressed, for instance mp3's, and from the sound of it, neither can movie files. Probably your only option would be to re-rip themn to a smaller size, but compared to the price of dvd+-r's, it seems like a waste of time to me

Your only other option would be to transcode the files down to a smaller file size. This will take quite a while, and will reduce the quality of the files, so i'd just burn the larger files to DVD (a DVD will take over 4GB, so 1GB files won't be a problem).

TMPGEnc will do this for mpeg files. Although the version supporting mpeg2 isn't free, there is a free trial. For DVDs, DVD shrink is free and will do this quite well, although i've never tried compressing DVDs that far - the quality would be TERRIBLE.

Your other choice would be to convert them from mpeg/vob to DivX or XviD. It'll give smaller files, and although there will still be a quality loss, it won't be as dramatic. Most stand alone DVD players won't play DivX or XviD files, however, and even computers may need a codec pack to be able to play them.

Most of the DVD plays I seen and the one we have at home play Divx. The only way to find out is check on the DVD player itself. If it has a symbol saying Divx on it usualy located on front where it says dolby surround and alll that. Then it will be able to play Divx files.
