file compression

well you know how theres a RAR and UNRAR which would be compressing and uncompressing files...
whats the best way to get the most out of compressing video files without losing much quality and still getting the files nice and small so that you could fit a whole bunch of them on a data dvd?

At this time the best compression is seen with mpeg II and mpeg 4 formats. WMV files are the common for WMP 9-11. There's only so much you can do with video files there. I would love to be able to take a number of 2.5-6gb files and store those on dvds or dvd-rws.

I just use windows media player to save and compress my stuff, but i think DivX also compresses video very well (http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/converter/)

I have tons of mp4 videos too because podcasts come in that, but I have no idea how to get vids into that format. I know they are small though, or maybe that is just because ipod resolution is small...

Hope you find something that works!

When it comes to video files, honestly not much. When compressing, what most of them sometimes do is make the video much smaller, as much as the viewable size. So an original 800x600 might get compressed down to like 400x300. Which isn't that great, unless you don't mind looking at grainy small quality and having to blow it up and watch on tv, which will look even worse. There are a few formats that you can use as said above, but make sure you're just not altering the sizes and what not, but keeping them the quality you want.

I have burning software here that allows three different qualities for fitting video onto disk. "best"-"Better"-"Good?" if you see where that goes. When a video is too large to "fit" on a disk you will see the disk circle start flashing where you then have to lower the quality setting down a notch. That also sees the loss of signal strength on playback to some degree there.

try to compress ur videos using WinAVI video converter
it is soooo fast & keeps the quality perfect

ZMedia Digital Technology burns vcds, svcds, and dvds and only compresses video when processing a burn to disk. That's not what was looked for here. What is needed is a program for compressing video files for storing on not burning to removable media. Any dvd burning software offers a degree of compression by actually splitting the video into 5 segments. A typical burning software will see the 5 separate folders like CDI, EXT, MEGAV, SEGMENT, and VCD. WinAVI video converter can be found at http://www.download.com/WinAVI-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-10573070.html
