File/Internet Sharing

Epidemik and I are trying to figure out how to share files and internet between each other's computers when he brings his computer over to my house. We're trying to get a network setup with an Ethernet cable from mine to his, and something seems to be connecting, but we cannot figure out how to share any files. We were also trying to get internet to work on his computer through mine. I'm running on wireless internet from a router in my den, and we tried hooking up the Ethernet cable from mine to his, but we had the same problem.
Does anyone know if we are doing something wrong? We've tried using the network wizards, but the options have nothing to do with our special case. Suggestions?

first off, make sure that the cable you're using is a cross over cable (specific for directly connecting two computers). then what you'll want to do is setup his computer to share the internet connection ( i think there is a wizard somewhere that will help you with this depending on your operating system) after you do this you'll want to setup an IP address for the wired adapter on both machines. The one that you want to be able to access the internet through the other one will need to have the other computer's IP address of it's wired connection filled into the default gateway and dns address slots. this essentially tells the other computer "hey this guy over here has an internet connection and is willing to share why don't you go to him for access" As for sharing files what you'll want to do there is go to the folders say through my computer and then right click and go to sharing and security (in win xp) and there are some settings and such that you'll need to set to enable sharing for that particular folder or hard drive. Please let me know if you need any specific part of any of that explained in more detail.

Hmm, i sensed the problem was in the ethernet cable cause we tried everything.
Well we dont have one of theses, we just have standard ethernet.

If i brought over my router could we get around this?

Heres a picture:

Wireless Router------(Wireless)----> Tux's Comp ----(Standard Ethernet)---> Wired Router ----(Standard Ethernet)-----> My Comp

Could we get that to work somehow? :D

thanks.

BTW: Congrats on almost 1k posts AdmnPower.

if you can see the colored wires on the end you can tell. if the colors match up perfectly eg both ends look exactly the same then it is a straight through, if they look slightly different eg a couple wires appear to be in a different place then odds are it is a crossover. They're not that expensive you'll have to either buy one or connect the computer directly into the router. If you connect the computer directly to the router then thats totally defeating the thing you're trying to accomplish. If you have RJ-45 ends you could look up instructions cut off one of the ends of the cable you have and rewire it to make the cable into a crossover.
