Files have disappeared

strange

Has anyone heard of this happening? I have a PC and am running XP. I have active AntiVar and have not detected any virus. My computer runs fine. No problems with software or other files to speak of, yet a few weeks ago I noticed that I am missing all my folders and documents. 100's of files. It seems that only my desktop files and folders are the only ones that remain. I bought a recovery program, hooked my Laptop Drive to my desktop and ran the software. Nothing! Although, it found 100's of files non of them were able to be opened. It almost seems as if someone deleted these files but, I do not believe that to be a viable explaination. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you.

So the computer runs fine, you're just missing files? No errors of any kind of strange behavious?

Could be that they were deleted accidentally by a virus program thinking they were infected, but thats a long shot. What kind of files where they? Just word documents and pictures and such? And were they just sitting on your main partition, or did you have them on a seperate HDD of somekind?

Types of files.

They were word docs, Excel, PDF's and pictures. Everything seems to be running just fine. The folders and the files were in my general Document folder on my C drive.

Have you checked to "View Hidden Files and Folders"? Maybe they got hidden accidentally.

Also, to find out if your My Documents was altered try and Right-Click on an empty spot in your My Documents folder and choose "Properties". Make sure the target location is set right, it may have been altered and that's why nothing appears.

I'm not too sure of what else to look for. Hopefully someone can chime in here with more ideas.
