Finally ready to build!

Hey Everyone,

Merry Christmas! I've finally got all the parts for my computer (except for the GPU which I'll get in the next few days) So I'm going to build now!

Is there anything I should look out for when building?
How long do you think the build will take?

Also, where do you think the cords coming out of the case will go in the motherboard. I have these cords coming out of my case: HD AUDIO, POWER SW, USB, Unlabbled 3 pin case fan cord, AC'97.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!!

I did an external build just then to test everything and when I short circuited the two PW pins on the F_PANEL, a flash came from my Power Supply along with a weird smokey smell. WHY DID THAT HAPPEN!?!

Now, whenever I short circuit those two pins the fan in my Power Supply spins for 0.3 of a second and then it stops at turns off.
What do I do now?

Hmm, seems like a defect psu. RMA it, my moms psu died a week ago and I had totally the same problem. When I removed the power cable the fans just moved a second and stopt.
Now I replaced it and everything works fine again...

Okay, that's not too bad. So just exchange the PSU for a different one at it should be fixed?

At the moment I have the monitor connected, ATX 12V 4-pin, ATX 24-pin, Monitor in the VGA slot, CPU with stock CPU Fan in the CPU Fan slot, 2 sticks of 4GB Memory (in slots 1 and 2) and the PSU and the monitor both plugged into the wall.

I turn on the PSU, put the screwdriver on the two PW pins and the PSU and the CPU fans start spinning for 0.3 of a second and then stops. I get nothing on the screen at all.

You still recommend that I return the PSU? Just want to make sure :)

What did you have your motherboard laying on when you did the test? It sound like a short.

Sounds like you either touched the wrong two pins and shorted the board or power supply. Or the board was touching something you didnt realize and shorted. Or the power supply was DOA and just shorted on the first boot.

I'm 99.9% sure I touched the correct pins. The board was definently only touching the box. What's DOA? I'm guessing that means faulty?

I'm thinking it's the PSU since a spark flew from within it. It's probably defective. Shorting the wrong pins on the front panel could've done it. The HDD and the power leds pins have 12V+ on them so it's possible.
