Finally, My New Computer!!

Hey everyone,
Here is my complete, final computer. I was wondering if you could look it over, tell me what you think, and just give your opinions. I still have $100.00 to spare, so any suggestions on a diff. mobo, processor, video card, hard drive, or memory would be great. Thanks a bunch.

Processor - P4 530J 800MHz FSB - $173.99

Motherboard - ASUS P5GPL - $97.00

Video Card - Gigabyte GeForce 6600 - $112.00 (A little Iffy right now)

Hard Drive - Samsung SpinPoint P Series 120GB SATA150 - $80.00

Memory - GeIL Value 1GB DDR SDRAM - $84.49

DVD Drive - NEC DVD Burner ND-3520A BK - $48.99

Total: $697 w/shipping and case
Budget: $800 +/- $50.00

That's It. I already got the case, and I have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers already. Is it all compatible? Any comments/suggestions would be great.

Thanks a lot,
Derek

all looks good to me, but if your looking to put the extra 100 in your system , i would get a better proc/mobo, or you could just pocket the extra 100:)

this might be a better motherboard for only a very slight increase in cost

Truthfully it look identicle to your motherboard except it can hold 4GB of memory while the one you chose can only hold 2GB of memory. I dont know if you ever going to want more then 2GB but it might be nice to have a option. It also has RAID options which the one you chose dont look like it has.

Honestly, I will never have more than 2GIG of RAM. Also, I don't even know what RAID is, and I don't think I would need it. Don't get me wrong, I will keep this board in mind. It would be nice to have expandability options later, so I'll look it over.
Thanks a lot for the response,
Derek

I will be using it for video-editing, gaming, and everyday stuff (Music, internet, Word). I am pretty set on Intel. Thanks for the suggestion.

For video editing and gaming I will strongly reccommend AMD. Although if your stuck on Intel that's fine. I doubt you will be overclocking this?

I've heard from Praetor that Intel is better for video-editing. Also, I am getting a good video card that should compensate for the 64 bit. I honestly don't really understand OCing. Is it something you control? Also, would I not be able to do it with the above? By the way, I got a 6600 GT video card instead of a 6600, and I also got a little bit better mobo.
Thanks,
Derek

I'm no expert on overclocking but you should be able to OC that setup. For real expertise on overclocking you would have to talk to someone else or see Praetor's Overclocking 101 thread.

Prescott processors run pretty hot, so big overclocking with stock cooling may not be very wise (or worth it because you will then need a better heatsink and CPU cooler).

By the way, why don't you add a PCI IDE card in so you can hook up more PATA drives with that motherboard?

(Maybe get a CD-ROM drive or a DVD-ROM drive to view DVD's and DVD movies without wearing out your burning drive.....or put more PATA hard drives in, in the future.)

I won't be doing big overclocking, just maybe a boost every once ina while. The board I got has 2 SATA slots, and that would be all I need. Also, I think I am going to get a cheap dvd/cd rom. I am way under budget... (I ordered my computer today)

Well for gaming, AMD would be the clean choice there but not for video editiing. And thats not to say gaming on Intel silicon isnt possible

That was the Precott cored Pentium 4 2.8-3.4 procesossors that had the heat issues ... not the Pentium 4 5xx and 6xx series

Yes, I got confused on those. Now I know better. :P
