Finger in gfx card fan caused reboot?

Hi,

I was playing around in my computer and I accidentally got my pinky stuck in the fan for like 0.5 secs. I'm pretty sure it came to a complete stop in that short time frame.

My computer immediately rebooted after this accident. I just wanted to make sure that it was caused by my finger hitting the fan. I guess if the fan suddenly stops there's a safety or something?

What are the possibilities of having damaged it?

Thanks!

I would think you might have wiggled a connector loose, or the card in the socket, would be more likely to cause a shutdown than stopping the fan.

However, it could have shut the pc down if the GPU was so close to overheating, that when you stopped the fan, it did.

If it starts back up again, I wouldn't worry too much, but I wouldn't do it again.

What are your GPU temps? Are the fan and fins clean?

I've stopped quiet a few of them checking for bad fans by touching them. Never had one restart on me. Are you sure the card is pressed all the way in and locked?

Might have been temps, I just OCd the card and I remember my temps being real hot.
The fan is clean, the card is brand new from 9 hours.

It's a XFX 4890 1GB, that card is already burning hot on stock clocks, lol.
I'm probably going to get an aftermarket cooler for it.

And ya, pretty sure the card was well locked, although I clipped it at a decent force so maybe it wiggled the connected or something.

Thanks for the input!

Getting a program that will allow you to increase the speed of the fan might help. Sounds like it may have been on the verge of overheat, and stopping
the fan just pushed it over.

I'm not sure which programs work for ATI cards though. I use EVGA Precision.

Speedfan works for some too.

Well there's a fan controller in ATI CCC, but the stock fans on 4890s are insane loud. I'm probably going to put it back to stock clocks and just buy an aftermarket cooler.

The OC on the card also raised my CPU temps a lot. I'm usually around 65c on load / 36c idle with my i7 and I was going over 74c and climbing with the OC on the gfx card and like 45-50c idle... my next mod is major cooling.
