Firewalls

I have encountered a problem with my computer firewall and security center.
I can't turn any of my firewalls on when I go to network connections. Then I right click on one of my connections go to advanced and where it says windows firewall I can't check any circles as to turn on my firewalls. I can't even keep my windows update on. Can anyone help?
 
You were right. Someone sent me an online Christmas card on AOL Messenger and had gottena bad virus. I had to a full reinstallation. I feel like I have enough security but still get hi-jacked and viruses from time to time. I have spybot, adaware and norton 2005. Shoudl I use ZoneAlarm along with my other firewall that I have?
