Firewire ignoring DV cameras, hair falling out

Having a big problem here. I do a lot of video work which mostly consists of uploading footage from one of my 3 mini DV cameras via Firewire, and editing in Premiere Pro.

About 2 months ago, I noticed that the computer just all together stopped recognizing my Sony HC40. I'd plug in the firewire cable and get nothing - no 'Found Hardware', no popup asking what I'd like to do, no yellow exclamation mark in the Device Manager; nothing. I did some research and saw that a lot of people had the problem of their PCs no longer recognizing their cameras via firewire, but before I had the chance to do anything about it - an unrelated event screwed up my installation of Windows and I had to re-install the entire thing. I figured starting from scratch would also help my firewire issue, but here we are a few weeks after the incident; and upon trying again for the first time since the reboot - nothing. Same problem, computer doesn't even see that anything's plugged in, with either of my 4 devices.

Device manager tells me there isn't a problem with my firewire card, a Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. When I plug a camera into the card, the camera's screen says 'DV IN' (something it's always said when I'd plug the DV cable in - so the camera definitely recognizes the PC, just not vice versa). I also have a firewire port built into my motherboard, but that one curiously does not even cause the camera to say DV in when connected. Maybe that one's fried, who knows. For now I'm paying attention to my separate firewire card.

I've tried updating drivers, I've tried seeing if any of my cameras have drivers (they don't need them for firewire apparently); I've tried all three of my PC's firewire ports and all three cameras, and I've spent hours reading about similar problems on Google. I've read one success story that involved changing the Texas Instrument card's drivers to use the DVCAM.sys file (which mine doesn't have listed under driver details), but windows tells me that the file has nothing to do with my device. So now, I turn to you. SA forums, please let's see if I can get my cameras working again.

Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller ...

The cameras are all NTSC mini DV, they are:
Sony TVR-900
2 (two) Sony HC-40s
SONY GD-900 (not actually a camera, but a VTR)

That's 4 mini DV devices that the PC just suddenly began ignoring. Any ideas on where to start?

Well, I've solved the problem!

$20 from Radioshack. I've read about a dozen forum posts from DV users that say swapping firewire cards didn't help, so I thought for sure this was a waste of my time - but it worked! So much for device manager telling me my previous card was working properly; if only I had tried this from the get-go.

I'm so relieved.

I probably cannot offer much help but I have experienced a similar problem - you can read my post about the subject.

Although I am currently pursuing other avenues I did obtain an alternative firewire/dv cable and it did let allow the computer to see the camcorder. However, I only did this once since I got the second cable as I am not that proficient in copying files to dvd believe it or not - never did it before - so I would prefer to record direct to VCR tape or DVD via DVDR. My other post shows that I am having problems with that too.

You might take a little comfort from the fact that when I could not get my computer to recognise my camcorder with the first cable I tried to use another pc and although it did it for a few seconds it then stopped recognising the camcorder just like my pc did. Consequently I would guess that there is nothing wrong with your pc.

This is a very annoying problem and like you I researched it extensively on the web - most of the "solutions" were too complex for me to try and I got the impression that most people just could not solve the problem.

The one difference between your situation and mine I think is that the message dv in continually flashed on my camcorder screen which suggested that the problem was intermittent - maybe this is consistent with it appearing to work at least once with a new cable.

I hope that you solve your problem and if you do please let me know what you did as it may help me out.

Good luck

Just read your last post - congratulations.
