Firewire problems

I've gotten a firewire cable recently, (4 pin to usb) and my computer doesnt seem to read the device while plugged in. Yes, I am a complete noob, but has anybody got any advice on what I can do to help the situation

Is there such a thing as a firewire to usb adaptor? I'm preetty sure you're getting things mixed up. Take a picture of the cable if you can.
