I don't know if this is the right forum and maybe some of these questions have been answered but I would like to build a computer and I have several questions. First of all I am work on my computer everyday all day with my work but mainly use internet based web programs that are proprietary to my company I work for. So i don't need alot of computing power. My wife is starting a photography business and uses lightroom and photoshop intensively. She pull in hundreds of .nef or RAW files that are 10-12 megs a piece to manipulate them. This just kills by 6 year old dell. It still runs pretty good for an old machine but def need to upgrade. I know how to install hardware so thought I would give a shot putting one together from scratch.

I started looking at tigerdirect and couldn't believe how many motherboard, chip options their are. From my understanding I don't need some badass video card. I need more heavy processing power from the cpu more than anything else. I like the idea of a integrated motherboard with sound and video on it. My dad had Fry's build him a computer last year and i thought I could just do it myself. I went to fry's today and they told me I needed 700 watt power supply with a ASUS sabertooth motherboard and Intel I5 chip. do you really need a 700 watt power supply? Is that overkill for what I want to do or just right?

If somebody wants to give me their two cents about what kinda machine to build I would appreciate it. AMD or Intel? I like the Cooler MAster Cases.

Nope, you don't need 700 watt, thats overkill :) We can get you by with a 400 watt with plenty of room to spare...
Whats you budget?

Budget is 1000 or less. I am not interested in gaming at all, just being used for photoshop, Lightroom and autocad. Also, I would like to build something robust enou for windows 8 when it comes out. Thanks!

no problem, well, ill build something thats around 600, that would be plenty fast for you. ill edit this post...

you may want to look into a quadro video card if your going to be working with autocad, photoshop and what not. it may help out.

If he has the budget and wants to use Autocad and photoshop really easily, I would definitely go with intel. Would be much faster.

And those programs eat up RAM. I would go at least 8GB with the programs he use, maybe even 16GB.

This, go i7 if your budget allows it.

Way better PSU for cheaper:

I use those programs, and it works fast with two...8 would be overkill, but if he wants, its only 15 bucks more.

Good find, yeah, switch the psu's OP.

I appreciate all the information on here! Thanks! This has given me something to think about. It's been years and years since I looked at hardware and alot has changed. I guess my way of thinking is that I had rather have overkill than too little. There are several things on here I haven't considered but all of this information helps a bunch!
