First post here... have a complicated question

My computer was working fine a few days ago. Then I randomly saw a loading bar that said 'updating' which disappeared rather quickly and since then I've been having numerous minor, but annoying problems such as:

1. The next day I noticed my computer took about 5 minutes longer to startup than it used to, which is very frustrating. I noticed also that AAWservice.exe (ad-aware) was now taking up almost 100% of CPU usage.
2. Computer hangs everytime when I try to put it on Standby
3. Finding it very hard to open Internet Explorer now. I check it in the task Manager and find iexplore.exe pops up for a few seconds then disappears. Other times I see it gaining the memory it needs but then just stops at a low number and never loads. I would have to try to open IE at least 14 or 15 times before it loads properly.
4. Noticed MSN messenger kind of freezes or has "not responding" phases now.

I tried AVG anti virus scanner and it found nothing. Tried Spybot and it found a Trojan but it removed it and I'm still having the same problems. So I have no idea what is going on or if that 'updating' loading bar was the cause. I also put the ad-aware on 'manual' instead of 'automatic' so it doesn't load during startup anymore, but still nothing improved. It just gets very annoying not being able to go on standby and having to struggle with trying to load IE so much.

Thanks for your help, I hope this isn't too much for a first post.

to add to the list:

5. I just noticed that also when I switch users now, it completely logs off the first one, and when I switch back I have to reload everything. I wish I knew what started all this.

Also forgot to mention: using Windows XP

looks like your computer has a lot of junk on it. First get rid of the Ad Aware, if that is taking so much CPU power, it may be infected. Download SuperAntiSpyware and install it, see if you find any spyware.

ok get rid of spybot

go to the computer security section of this forum,
go to recomended programs, and downlaod "malwarebytes" update it and run a complete scan. when its done remove the things it finds, post the "log" in the security forum, then run hijack this and post that log. both programs are i nthe recommended list in the computer security sub forum.

also defrag do you know how?

i will try those programs right now thanks. i don't think i know how to defrag though. what does it do exactly?

well defragging helps with searching through a harddrive for files/programs. basically when you start up a program it has to bring it up in a harddrive. but over time you build up temp files and such which corrupt a harddrive. this means it is fragmenting. there are unnecessary files, also when a harddrive is writing (correct me if im wrong) it creates "gaps" basically errors while writing files to the disk. These all are involved in fragmentation. when you defrag and do a file cleanup it cleans out these unwanted things. i think i explained it good but someone else should correct me because i dont know if that is 100 percent correct. But it is along those lines :D

to defrag go to start/accessories/system tools/system defrag

you want to defrag on a schedule you can set that up, usually it is already scheduled if its not schedule it :D

I must be slow in the head. I still can't find the 'recommended list' in the computer security sub-forum
