OK the cpu is a 2600 T core at 2.08, gigabyte mobo, pc 333 ram

the cpu is running anywhere form 67-75c and has got up to 85 once...wants to run at 68 doing nothing but monitoring it on everest home edition.

the heatsink and fan is a mascool spreeze falcon? something like that..rated up to a 2700+ and 3200+ but don't seem to be doing good with it.

case is a pos case with no sides and no fans (this isn't helping but sholdn't be THIS hot)

I did put a tad o artic silver 5 on the cpu and the heatink had the white goop on it already.

what should I do or is the temp normal for this cpu?

thanks!

Thats the problem. You need to clean off the old stuff before you put the new stuff on :)

Well some white stuff came on the bottom of the heatsink. But for comfort I went ahead and still put some artic 5 silver I bought on the cpu itself. So what do you mean? are you saying I shouldn't have put the artic 5 on the cpu? and just had the stuff on the heatsink on it?

I didn't put the artic 5 over anything old or nothing just put that on the cpu then placed the heatsink/fan on it which already had somekind of goop on the bottom of the heatsink.

so what do you meant exactyl becausa I'm willing to try anything!

I mean either use one or the other (preferably the AS5) ... but not both ... i.e:
You need to clean off the old stuff before you put the new stuff on

Well "already had somekind of goop" = "old stuff" -- whether the old stuff is on the HSF or its on the chip.... its still old stuff

^^What he said :D

Can I reccomend that the temperature I am getting with Silicone (Arctic Colling or something like that is what the make is called) is 28 C !!! Now is that good or what? But yeah, you can't have two layers of different pastes.

Arctic Silver Instructions:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

On that page, they explain as a MUST:

Clean the mating surfaces completely with a low residual solvent (High-purity isopropyl alcohol or acetone will work) and a LINT FREE cloth. (i.e. lens cleaning cloth) If another thermal compound has previously been applied to the heatsink, the mounting surface should be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned with a xylene based cleaner, (Goof Off and some carburetor cleaners) acetone, mineral spirits, or 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. It is important to keep the surfaces free of foreign materials and NOT to touch the surfaces (a hair, piece of lint, and even dead skin cells can significantly affect the thermal interfaces performance, especially on modern small core CPUs as the surface area is already severely limited). In addition, oils from your fingers can adversely affect the performance by preventing the micronized silver fill from directly contacting the metal surface. (Fingerprints can be as thick as 0.005")

You can also go to these liks for more guides to applying thermal paste:

1) http://www.subzeropc.com/article/thermalinterface.htm
2) http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/faqs/kb/5,61.html

ok i'll try that but nothign was old the heatsink was brand news so that goo wasn't old but I'll scrape it off and just use the artic 5.

thanks

You guys are right I only need the artic 5. Any advice on how to apply ? I just dabbed some on and rubbed it smooth with my finger before but it talks about cleaning it first with alcohol to remove old...looks like that would hurt the cpu. Also says to smooth artic with a razor, if you scratch the cpu it will screw it up looks like ti me.

1. Clean it off with the isopropyl
2. Dab a bit on and squeegee it around with some plastic or metal or whatever

Ok I cleaned heatsink and cpu dye good and put a thin layer on both the cpu dye and the bottom on the heatsink and it's HOTTER now........right now while I'm typeing this cpu temp is at 86 degrees c

i went from 66 to 86!!! please help

hot as hell

go into bios load default setings just to make shure your not runing on modified setings. next make shure your heat sink is rated for the CPU make shure not to over clock. If it still runs Hot in windows see what CPU speed its reading. Might have a bad pin and its over clocking its self. Back in the old days we use to remove a few pins to over clock a CPU lol Cant do that any more. Dont use everest home to tell temps , use easy tune if its a gigabyte board. Also reach in and feal the bottom of the heat sink see if its realy that hot. some times the temps are way off i had a board that was 20c off all the time.

what voltage are you running at? make sure its 1.65v if you are running stock 2.0GHz.

You are POSITIVE you have the HSF on the right way? If you flip it upside down it will still mount, but it will not make good contact with the CPU.

Also what monitoring device are you using? what sensor is the CPU on? It may be a faulty reading. Try this:

After having the PC on for a while, touch the side of the heatsink with the back of your hand. If it's just warm...its not 86C. If you feel immense heat from it before your hand even contacts the heatsink...don't touch it. you could burn yourself if it REALLY is 86C. Just move to it slowly and see if it feel s hot.

A thin layer on the CPU + a thin layer on the heatsink = not a thin layer between the CPU and heatsink = too much thermal paste. Why would you put thermal paste on both when all you really have to do is put some on the cpu (since it has a smaller area ... would (a) take less effort and (b) use less thermal paste)

well no I re coated the cpu dye after I cleaned everything good and this time I used my old artic silver 3......the 5 is gooey and real tacky, just plain hard to work with!

Well, your temperature is 100% sure unacceptable. I suggest you to take the CPU out and clean everything out then use the paste again. And if that still didn't lower the temperature too much, then it might be the fan and the heatsink. So if the paste doesn't work, you really should consider getting a new fan and heatsink.

Lol

This was pretty funny to read. Well lemme tell you that your problem was likely a combination of a bad cooler and too much paste. Prior to applying stuff, you should have used google bro :). Well, you applied 2 layers of different stuff, which was definitely over what should have been there. Also did you make sure that you did not move the HSF around while placing it over the CPU? Well 46 seems like a better temp 4 sure. Good luck and keep in mind that it takes 2 weeks to get a a true reading.
