First Project: Need Help

Ok. Im thinking of building a new computer, but gradually. I want to basically change everything before college in August, but I dont wanan wait until summer when i have enough money. I have 500 dollars right now (wait two more weeks and turn that into 700) and with the $500 (or $700) i want to get a new cpu, mobo, and ram. However, since this is my first project, I dont know what I am doing what so ever.

1. CPU: I want a core 2 duo. I know the more expensive conroes have 4 mbs of cache whiel the rest have 2. How big of a role does the cache play in my build? I am willing to pay more for the extra 2 mbs of cache, if it has an even slightly significant performance/speed increase. The speed of the processor doesnt matter too much as I'm thinking of ocerclocking (have to figure tht out later). So right now I'm looking at the e6600, but only if the cache is important. (Also i heard that Q2 the 6000 series will have 4 mb cache across the board. Wait or no? Cuz Q2 is basically the beginning of summer and its winter now....)

2. RAM: I want 2x 1 gb dimms. I'm thinking of getting ddr2-800 speed but dont exactly understand latency and clock cycle speeds. The lower the better for both? And why does ddr have lower latency than ddr2?

3. Mobo: Anything with good upgradability. Small enough tho so it doesnt need an oversized case.

because you have a small budget and time on your hands, wait until may. May? yes May. major new lines of products will be released and older products (the e6600) will drop in price allong with the ram. but if you cant wait, i will happily assist you in a build that you can order tomorrow, or today.:D :P

yes i as with many others are in the same position as you are. dont worry. what system are you running now?
