First time builder here guys, need some tips/advice!

Hey guys, so I spent a LOT of time researching this out and understanding the terms and concepts of how to build and understand a desktop computer, I want to go for a somewhat compact gaming build that's relatively cheap, what I have here is exactly 700$, but I need to know if this build will work or not, so, that's my general question, will it? Also, I know about going with Intel cpu's and whatnot, they're better by far, but for the money, I believe AMD makes a great product, so I'm going to support that, but if you have suggestions for cheaper, better equipment, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Like if you have a cheaper mobo or cpu, please tell, but I would like to spend as little money as possible for this compact system, I love this case, and I would like to stick with micro ATX. I plan on playing games like BF3, and Crysis 2, but, I am not the expert with this stuff, so your guy's opinions would be greatly appreciated!

But, here it is....My first (want to) build...

GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-USB3 mobo

Also, if I'm missing something or something seems stupid, keep in mind I am a first timer, I don't know all, I wish to pop my proverbial building cherry, I would absolutely LOVE suggestions though!

Thanks a lot!

Grab that RAM immediately. Normally that would cost 60 dollars or more. It's going to be exactly what you need no matter what route you take. Unless of course you get a board with Triple Channel RAM but you most likely won't.

Not sure about mobo with 2500k. I think it's ok.

Get 2500k over any AMD chip. I'm not a fanboy (I use AMD) but it's still better than every chip they have.

For a HDD get an F3 Samsung Spinpoint. Best HDD for the price.

Video card should probably be a 6850 or 560 TI if you can swing for that much.

I'd recommend a Corsair CX600 for your PSU. Mine is great and you want to have some headroom for your power requirements.

If you plan to Crossfire/SLI ever, then you'll want a 750w at least from Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, Antec, and there are a few other good brands.

Even though intel is the better chip, I still would go with AMD and use that money for a 6950 2gb video card. It would be a much better setup. Don't get the 6-core. It would do nothing for gaming. Go for a 955, 965, or 960T. All are great chips.

And yeah, order that RAM right now. That's a great deal that literally won't be there tomorrow.

And I would recommend a corsair TX650 for the power supply.

Is the 955 still going to be a viable gaming chips for the next couple years?

(much for his/her benefit as mine :P )

Games really do not use that much of the CPU. I'm not saying a dual core will match the performance of a quad, but the main thing you're concerned about when building a gaming machine is the graphics card. That is where the load of the game is placed.

For other programs other than games, like say, photoshop and other high-processor usage programs, the intel would be the better choice.

But upping his choice of a 6850 to a 6950 and "downgrading" the intel to AMD will get better FPS.

Thanks guys for the replys! The suggestions help! So, due to your suggestions, tips, knowledge, I now plan on going with some X4 AMD CPU, and an unbelievable graphics card, I definitely want this to be a MICRO ATX build though, I don't want the computer oversized and unbearable to carry, I am a college student and moving my junk around all the time, I will also take the advice and jump on the RAM ASAP, thanks!

Your RAM is incompatible with your motherboard. Try this board:

And can't squeeze a little extra for the video card? You could get some nice frames with a little more expensive one.

Thanks for the reply! Okay to the incompatibility, that's why I'm here for help, and would this board fit in a micro ATX case? Budget wise, this graphics card seems like the best, I guess I could get a little more in moneywise, but I don't really wanna go above 180 for the graphics, thanks again!

Oh yes, I forgot about the micro ATX requirement. The only AM3+ board that would work with that RAM and is micro ATX is:

Not sure if it is a good board or not, might have to wait for another member's opinion.

im still sorta wary of the ATI cards for OpenGL support...noticed that their lately really a piss poor solution for OpenGL on Secondlife, a 6950 with socket 1366 intel chip cant push the framerates my phenom 955 can with a 460...it shouldnt work that way...but does.

Thank you very much everyone, especially Claptonman, you have been a great help with this! My gratitude for what you have helped me with is immense
