Fitted new DVD ROM and get Disc Boot Failure

Hi,
I am new and do not have much experience of this type of thing but here goes;
I run Windows XP system and all was well until;

My DVD ROM would not play and just speeded up then slowed down and gave up.
I bought (via Ebay) an identical DVD ROM Model No; DHM-G48 although second hand described as working.
Took my old one out and fitted new one.
Now when I switched pc back on I got "Disc boot failure"....."Insert system disc..."
When I put the old one back the system starts fine without having to do anything (but obviously the old DVD ROM will still not work)

So;

1. Is this asking me to insert my Windows XP Home Edition Medion Product Recovery CD-ROM?
2. Will I lose any data from my system if I insert this disc?
3. Do I need to do anything else?

:confused:

All of the connections are correct and everything looks fine.

Apologies for being thick! Any assistance appreciated (preferably in simple easy terms please!)
Cheers

Sorry probably should have given more details on the DVD ROM;

It's a;

ULTIMA DHM-G48 16X IDE DVD-ROM DRIVE‏

most likely the jumpers. these are the little white things next to the ide connector. did you set the jumpers corectly? for instance your old one was in SLAVE so the new one should be in SLAVE. if it was in MASTER then set it to MASTER. the position is not always the same so you'll have to consult the manual. also, did you connect the drive to the same connector on the ide?

after that go into bios and see if your computer recognizes the cd drive
