High, i have a compaq presario with a motherboard MS-7184
I was wondering if I could fit an athlon 64 FX 55 or an athlon 64 FX 57 to it.
It has a 939 socket for CPU.
The website cpu world says it is possible to fit an athlon 64 FX 53.

Please let me know if it is possible.
I have 2GB RAM, good sound card, Nvidia 8400 GS graphics card but I really
do need to upgrade my Athlon 64 3500+ CPU

Athlon FX series chips are EXPENSIVE!
Back when they made them, they were just hand-selected cores, and came with unlocked multipliers.
Now, you can get the AMD Phenom II X4 Black Edition CPU's which also have unlocked multipliers, probably for less than the cost of an old FX.
I agree with johnb35 - use what you have and get a new AM3 motherboard, CPU, and memory.

Third... Plus using a board from a compaq may present some issues. Many boards like these are pretty restrictive with regards to the processors they will accept. Even if the hardware technically supports it, the software (BIOS) may not. Unless you can find an FX for next to nothing, I also agree with the notion of doing an upgrade.
