OK - heres the deal
i am working on a computer that is around 10 years old
in the past all cables were removed - and now i need help putting them back in, its a little personal challenge to see if i can get the comp to boot
i have it all on webcam - if any1 can watch and help me
add me on msn : [email protected]
thanks:D

when i power up the comp i get a quiet high pitch noise comin from the psu
no lights,no fans nothing
everything is securely in place
only thing i am worried about is - i have 2 leads that only seem to go in 1 slot
they are labelled p1 and p2:S
any1...

erm cheers for the advice ...
anyways - its booting up, ie. fan and lights come on
cd drive dnt open
dsnt connect to monitor
floppy needs connecting
reset dont work
cpu fan dont work

just minor jobs:D

Cd drive works
floppy works (but light stays on), is this a problem with connections
reset works
all light works
connects to monitor

this comp was designed for windows 95 - it was completely broke but now i have it working

is there anything i can do with the case?

Yeah, that usually means the cable is upside down.

I don't quite follow the question. Do you want to use the case for another computer? Mod the case? Or are you looking for uses for the computer itself (i.e. the case + everything in it).

tbh im not sure
just wondering if people would advise me staying happy at getting it workin, which was my challenge
or actually trying to run things on it to further my challenge
btw i have a perfectly good working desktop computer:D

Word processing and/or Internet may be tolerable. I remember when my computer was stolen a couple of years back, and I had to use a 486 for a couple of months before the insurance came through. It was a bit of a pain, but at least I could get things typed up.

So maybe you could keep it as a backup to your other computer, but computers of that age really aren't that much use in the traditional sense.

If you are looking for a challenge, however, you may be surprised at what you can get out of these computers. Here's a list of possible uses: http://www.dsj.net/compedge/oldhardware.html

Unfortunately, if it doesn't have a NIC most of these ideas will require you to get one (although 10Mb/s ISA network cards are only about $1 at many computer swapmeets).
