I don't know if any of you have had this problem but my grandmom's pc wouldn't shut down so I clicked start> run> and typed in sfc /scannow and then the computer shut down she said it hadn't shut down for three or four years and was really surprised.

Just figured I would let you guys know in case any of you are having problems like this.

that will work to but if its runnin updates and it restarts automatically then it won't shut down.

it's usually caused by an IRQ conflict or an incompatable driver but there can be many other reasons. had there been any recent software or more likely hardware additions before it started to play up??

she has mcafee on it that might have caused it

better than NORTON mate. although i've never seen any problems with an AV causing a pc not to shut down. unless it's let a virus slip through of course, so indirectly that WOULD be the AV causing the problem. i'm sticking to the Interupt Request Value (IRQ) scenario.

Did you try just unplugging it from the wall was my first thought, but after I reread what you wrote I decided not to put that :P
I have the same problem sometime as well. I'll do the whole start>shutdown thing but sometimes it just doesn't and I have to manuelly do it.

As for Norton on the last page I personally despise the program, my dad and I both had pretty bad experience with them and I suggest staying clear.
As the not shutting down issue goes, I have never heard of that problem before so thank you for posting it in case it happens to me or someone I know.

i'm with you on the NORTON..... i have never liked it. I use panda AV

Panda???? worst av program out there panda is worse then nothing

well it's kept my 4 desktops and laptop safe for the last 4 years so it can't be that bad can it?? where do you get your info from then?? you show me 5 bad reports of panda from 5 different sources and i will show you 10 bad reports on norton, and anyway i AM NOT getting into a discussion with a 14 year old about pc security so that's that. BACK UP your claims or go away.

sorry don't mean to sound rude but the amount of pc's i've had to correct due to them having norton is ridiculous,

I have NEVER had one to fix due to Panda and i have never had any problems using Panda ...BUT i am not alone when it comes to thinking Norton is crap and i'm not going to back down on this so lets end it here. :D

nicely ended. I use AVG free whether it's the best or not. Either way no fees. I tried that shutdown icon, it's pretty neat but I'm not sure if it's the best way to shutdown my computer all the time, since it seemed to do a few funny things so I'm not sure if it's the same as a normal shutdown, is it?

firstly...THANKS:)

Secondaly NO it's not the same as a normal shutdown especially if you set it to instant (value=0) as other running processes wouldn't have time to shutdown properly , but i think the default time for a shutdown is 30 seconds anyway, so if you left the value at that then maybe it would behave the same. (i tried it on mine and it behaves ok at 30)
I only posted the shutdown method because you said you couldn't shutdown at all and just hitting the power switch is definately NOT the best way to do things. GLAD I COULD HELP YOU

Norton AV is a product of Symantec, the largest multi-national security software company in the world. BTW, this is not the response of a 14 year old. I am 25, a senior technician at a small IT consulting firm. So, if you want to engage, go ahead. I refuse flame wars. Oh, and BTW again, you already have engaged in a discussion with a 14 year old: "you show me 5 bad reports of panda from 5 different sources and i will show you 10 bad reports on norton" - making demands... how is that not engaging? Explain.

Furthermore, you're making a circular argument, demanding that this guy back up his claims, when you have not done him the courtesy to back up your own. I'm not judging Panda. It's simple: capitalism. Supply and demand - you see, when a company is as large as Symantec, they inherently have the resources to provide a better product. It's the implementation of those resources that make the difference. Case in point: M$. Microsoft routinely releases poor quality products. Apple, some would argue, does not. See... implementation. Symantec, IMO, has consistently held the market share on AV for a reason: it's the best product on the market.

I deal with virus and spyware infections every day. I routinely uninstall Panda and AVG from clients' PCs and sell them a copy of Norton. Why? Because I don't want them coming back and complaining, and guess what? They don't. They don't get infected.

You want reports on Norton? You need to be more specific. Do you want white papers? Studies? Statistical evidence? Reviews? Specify, dude. And... if I have time, I will reply... so, yeah, you don't have to deal with "a 14 year old." Bye for now.:P
