Flash Memory Stick Problems

I've been using a 32GB flash memory stick to archive files, and I've been experiencing a fair bit of corrupted data on it. I've been using the "safely remove hardware" feature on Vista, but I suspect it's not working as it should.

After it says "you can now safely remove the hardware," the hard drive light is still working very hard with no other programs running, and the next time I use the stick, I find a lot of damaged and corrupted files on it.

I'm wondering if Vista is at fault for telling me it's safe to unplug the stick when it's not, or if the fault is with the stick itself. I'm not sure how I can determine the answer.
