flashing start menu

I have a friend who has had a consisten problem with her computer and nothing seems to work...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

- when her 'g' key is hit, the start menu comes up---she gets an external keyboard, the problem comes back once in a while

- with external keyboard still hooked up the start menu flashes uncontrobably hindering her use of anything else on the desktop----she tries virus scans, deleting things, and finally a system restore with no success :confused:

~ we thought thought it was a virus but it seems to be a deeper problem....any suggestions on what to do?????
 
It could be the keyboard, try another one. If not try going into control panel, then keyboard and make sure the country selection is correct.
Otherwise I would just do a fresh install of the OS.
