Hello everyone, I am a computer tech. and have been working on computers for nearly Ten years now. Recently I raninto a problem that Ihavenever ran into before. on one of my customer's computers, when ever they move the mouse or click on a link on the internet explorer, it cause the floppy drive to begin running for about five or six seconds. Also i have noticed that her task manager is corrupted. There are no longer any tabs ontop of the task manager. I have tried running a restore feature, a repair function on the disk and have re-installed windows ontop of itself.(re-upgraded windows again.) thinking that, that would solve the problem but it did not. The taks manager is still corrupted with no tabs ontop. I have sought help from my p.c. repair text books and my books that i have used during my p.c.repair course when i was going to computer school. All to no avail. I believe that part of the kernal is corrupted. If any of you have ran into this problem before, i would surely appreciate any info. that you could give me in terms of exactly what lthe problem is. Im really considering going ahead and just reformat the hard drive and doing a clean install of windows. If anyone of you has any idea on this weird problem, i would surely apprecaite your response and information on this windows error.

Thank You very much. John ;)

Yes i have tried double clicking on the task manager's border. It has not helped at all. Thank you very much. If you find out any more information on this issue, please feel free to respond to my post.

Thank you very much. johnhd28

When i get nasty little buggers of a problem like that i just save all my school work to a disk. My music to my ipod. Then i just go for a full fledged reformat and spend a day updating all the windows "updates". You no get all the service packs and etc. Then i reload my backuped info and im done. It may take a while but its a failsafe that always works, at least for me.

And also clear the cmos if you want a clean comp
do you think that the SAM would be corupted? yeah i guesse that wouldnt be an impossiblity probably a good idea to do that now that i think about it :)

it sounds like some sort of adware/spyware to me, it sounds like some type of malicous software causing it.. what did you try to find/remove those things?

If you re-installed windows I doubt corruption is the problem. Your looking at either some hardware issues (bad HD, FDD,...etc), or some malware issues, (which doing a soft install of windows would do nothing for). Have you run any virus/spyware scans on the machine yet? We have a sticky to help you with that. If after, the problems remain please post a HijackThis log in the Security forum to further eliminate the possibility of malware on the system. Then you can be sure that hardware would be the culprit. :)

Edit: I have seen malware take limited control of hardware before...

Hey Thanks everyone for all your information and suggestions, but the customer decided to go ahead and allow me to do a clean install. re-format the H.D.D. and do a fresh install of windows xp. Thanks again to all of you who have provided such wonderful and helpful information to me.

Thank you very much. johnhd28.
