floppy help please

hi not sure why i cant format a floppy disk when i try i get message says no ID address mark found or windows was unable to complet the format. i disabled avg just incase it was stopping it from format can someone help me figure out whats the prob.

Been a long time since I,ve used a floppy drive. How are you doing it, are you just right clicking the drive in My Computer and picking quick or full format?
 
dont have a floppy that has any stuff on it but i never used this floppy drive its about 6 years old i took it out of my old compaq and i have tryed to format about 6 diff new floppys and get same message
 
Sounds like you have a bad drive or something configured incorrectly. Assuming you still have the old Compaq, I'd stick it back in there and give it a shot. Be sure the cable's connected correctly and you're using the correct end if it has more than one connection on it. I think the end with the twisted cable is typically the "primary" drive.
 
Sounds like a bad drive, unless you have the cable connector upside down. Does the light on the floppy drive stay on all the time?
