A usb floppy drive can't be booted from like one on the ide floppy controller since usb drivers haven't been loaded by the OS yet. For XP you should be able to download a WinFlash update for seeing the bios updated. For board drivers you are generally running Windows or the other OS when drivers by themselves are either prompted for(Windows mainly) or you use an installer or manual update method.
