Folder restarts

Hi all, I'm having annoying problems with my machine right now. Most folders work just fine, files can be opened, etc. but I have a few folders that will restart the computer as soon as they're opened. Sometimes I'll see a quick glimpse of the files inside, other times I won't. One folder even lets me see what's inside then restarts when I try to open a file.

I've tried a Scandisk with all fixing options available. Any ideas? I'm using Windows XP. A friend suggested it could be a power supply problem - I have an old power supply pumping out only 230W - three HDDs, two DVD drives and others can't run on that, can it?

Edit: Forgot to mention that this isn't only happening on one drive - it's happening over all three.

Shoot... I was going to mention it could be a bad drive...

Have you scanned recently for viruses, spyware, and the such? I suppose this could be power related, but I feel it's more software related... Maybe try a Windows Repair, or System Restore back a few days(assuming this is a recent problem...)

Thanks for the reply - I have some more info now. I just tried opening the folders in Safe Mode, and they all work perfectly. So it's software related, it seems. I'll do a full virus scan, but my AV updates automatically and is set to scan everything that is added to or run from the HD.

While in safe mode, you did log in as your normal username, or some other? Regardless it's software, but I'm just wondering if it's something that could be closed or a problem with your account...

After scanning your computer from viruses, spyware, and such, get Hijackthis and post a log here.

Safe Mode I logged in using my username. Full boot-time AV scan (Avast! with latest defs) and AdAware scan done (worst was some Alexa nonsense, but that's gone now). I know every single process that's open, so I don't think there's anything there.

I might have an idea. I believe that all of the folders that are causing problems are set to the Thumbnail view in Explorer. I've turned off image preview in the registry, but is there a way to just turn off all thumbnails? I'll see if that works.

I just turned off thumbnail caching, and set all folders to a list view. This seems to have solved the problem. Thumbnail generation was the issue - why, I'm not sure. I don't want any folders as thumbnails anyway so I'm happy. Thanks all :)
