I hope I'm on the right fourm?
I couldn't think of a title so here goes:

I have 5 computers on the network. I have 2 computers with Windows 7 and 1 Vista on Ethernet. 2 computers wireless. One of the wirelesses (Vista laptop) can get on the Internet with Ethernet and can also get on wireless on someone else’s wireless network but not my wireless network but my XP wireless laptop can get on. The router works, all the computers work, Ethernet and wireless works. What could be the problem?

Does the router require a password to get on? If so are you sure the password has been entered correctly?

Even so I suggest deleting the network profile on the laptop and re-connect, checking that the password has been entered correctly.

Try turn off the wireless security to see if the Vista laptop can connect to internet. if yes, you have problem with the router+vista+security combined problem. then you have to upgrade the router's firmware.
If you still can't connect to internet without wirless security, then is something else. I had the problem like that before.
Cheers.

the issue is either with your 1) configuration on the vista or 2) config or compatiability of the router. Pls share the details like makes, service packs etc. Cheers.

Yes I use a password to get on to the router and I used my password that I've used for years which is a password I will remember for life.

on the vista labtop you have to select which wireless network you want to connect to,select yours from the list

I have and it don't work but we did select someone else network and it work. Of course we got off and was just to see if the adapter was any good which it is.

How can I turn off the security at the laptop?

When you say the Vista wont connect wirelessly, do you get any notifications? I'm hoping you get asked for a username/password at this point!

The laptop connects to the network with no security and I've set the router at WPA MODE: Auto (WPA or WPA2) Cipher Type: TKIP or AES so now I have to play with the security setting or if you can give me any advice I would imprecate. If I aggravated anyone on this site: I'm sorry, I'm just an old man doing the best he can.

You don't turn off the security on the laptop. is the router you need to turn off to try. if it connect without the security and can't with security. you have the compatibility issue with the firmware on the router and the vista OS, I had the same problem before with my old Linksys router. After I upgrade my firmware the probem solve.
Cheers.

So what your saying is to upgrade the firmware on the laptop and the router both? If so then I'm have to try it but I have have before?

As voyagarfan has said. Delete the existing wireless profile for your connection and reset it back up. Go into network and sharing center and click on the left where it says manage wireless networks. Then delete your existing connection and set it back up. This usually fixes the issue. There is currently an issue with Vista that casues this and there has been no fix for it yet but usually deleting and resetting it up works.

I would suggest you delete the wireless profile and recreate it. There may have been some accidental adjustments that prevent security working properly. Deleting and recreating the profile should eliminate any security or misconfigurations.

Thank You

I want to think everyone one on this site for trying to help me. I took the router and put it on a different computer (My ex-wife’s) and re-did everything with different everything with the help of D-Link tech support which only lasted 2 hours this time and still can't get my ex-wife’s laptop on the Internet. It works fine until I switch form a D-Link 524 to a D-Link 655. I offered to put in a USB Network Adapter and even pay about half of a new laptop. She wasn't interested so maybe that's why she's my ex-wife.
PS: The wireless network does work because I have my Roku on it.
I gave my ex-wife an old beat up 8 year old netgear network adapter worth about $5 and it worked. So a $5 Adapter solved a problem that I couldn't solve in 2 weeks, 6 hours of tech support and a hundred post, that's life!!!
