For editing, is Apple really the way to go?

Ive always like videos and music. Ive decided I want to get into Video editing as a hobby. I was thinking about building my own PC but everyone is saying to go Mac. Is Mac really the way to go? Is it possible to build a Mac myself. Im not much of an expert when it comes down to Macs so school me.
 
It is nothing more than a personal preference. You need to do a lot of personal research to find out what your need. you will spend a lot more $$$ (2x-3x) on a mac than a pc.. quite an expensive "hobby". your input hardware will be very important as well.
 
like, to be honest i hate mac... uh... i mean dislike mac... :) but that doesn't mean mac sucks, that is just my personal opinion...
but, Mac is supposed to be really good with graphics! i would only recomend you getting Mac if you are gona do some major video editing, and not do normal PC tasks.
If you want to do everything a PC does as well as video editing, then go with building your own PC.
 
Macs use to be the only way to go, but now days you can get all the same software for a pc and a pc is faster so the old saying macs are better for video editing is a thing of the past! I do alot of video editing and burning dvd's with a celeron 2.93ghz and 1 gig of ram and it does it flawlessly! I had a few issues when I was running 512mb of ram but since I got another 512 and a better video card I can do anything a mac can do and probably faster! I even multi task one time I was converting video, downloading p2p, burning a dvd and web surfing all at the same time with out as much as a hickup...do that on a mac and see what happens. Build yourself a nice pc and enjoy! :D

My mac Mini's ok, but definetly no better than a PC at an equal speed. It's clocked at 1.33GHz, but seems no faster than my old 1.4GHz Athlon or my 1.6GHz Sempron Laptop...

Now, it's a very nice computer, don't get me wrong. It's practically silent, very well built, etc etc... But, I do not beleive it's as good as people suggest. I know many people say the G series processors were the best for video editing, but rather than spending that kind of money for the top of the line mac, spend about the same for a good PC and a really good peice of video editing hardware(like a DV-Storm or whatever's out now) and you'd be much better off, IMO.
 
My friends mom uses a mac for video editing. She likes it a lot. ITs very reliable and pretty powerful. I personaly have never done any video editing on a mac so i wouldnt know what is better.
 
Well, iCut certainlly isn't worth using on a Mac... Don't buy one just for that :P People tell me I use try Final Cut...maybe one day...
 
This isn't exactly the place to be asking this kind of question. We all know many of the members of this forum are biased or *cough* fanboys *cough* ;) .

Go with the mac, and I promise you will be satisfied.

anything you can do on the mac can be done on the pc, and so much more. Mac's are overpriced for their capabilities. Go with a PC.

Dude, I OWN a mac mini. I know it's not the most powerful mac out there, but I'm sure a PC in the same range would be much better suited, and I'm quite sure even the faster ones wouldn't be at par with a PC...
 
ya since this is a hobby, I dont wantto be spending $2g on a Mac setup if its not any better than a PC setup of the same value.
 
Again, this is just an opinion... But I believe that Mac's tend to be more stable, higher quality, and the OS's tend to be a little more functional and fluent, for me. However, I do own a PC(only) and fully intend to keep one because they are easier to manipulate the components. Another positive is that Apple has an extreme level of quality control over their product, so in my experience parts tend to fail at a much lower rate. One other note: Mac's are and were falling behind in processor power because IBM was not able to keep up with Intel and AMD. That problem has now been resolved, obviously, and Mac has gone to Intel to compete with the faster speed processor.

Now, Macs have very little flexibility with their components and also basically cannot be upgraded. However, Macs hold their value MUCH more than a PC, and therefore is easier to upgrade in the future. Additionally, Mac OS's have NO registry, so you can install programs and move them without having to worry about file paths, etc...

Can a PC about $500 less do the same job? Definitely. It just comes down to the age-old question of Price vs. Quality vs. Demand. So, if the extra quality and stability is worth the money, I'd go with the Mac.

Am I typing this on a PC, yes. Will I always own a PC, most definitely yes. I will however own a Mac laptop for doing business and important stuff on in addition to my toy/game computer that will be a PC. If I were you, I think that you want to play games and do mostly other stuff than this video editing, and therefore the availability of software and flexibility of the PC would be much better for my situation now and in the longrun.
 
dciscouts - Have you ever used OS X? It's actually quite bad. Any long time mac user will tell you this. I've not really used macs between OS 8 and now, but I can see a huge difference in the OS, and many new problems. As slow as my old macs were, I do have many more little errors with my new mac mini than my old ones... All in all the macintosh is a great computer, but I don't think their operating system is quite up to par with windows in a few ways. On top of that, there's the compatability issue that leaves you very limited in your choices.

I'm sorry, but I believe the quality of mac is much better than windows. Anyone who owns a mac (And is far beyond computer literate) will tell you the same. Do you all enjoy having that constant paranoia of malware? Sure, blaim it on windows popularity. Given Mac had the monopoly Windows has on the OS market, I strongly believe there would be many less security issues. How about windows stability, seen the BSOD lately? I can't remember the last time I've seen a mac crash, running an OS based off Darwin and FreeBSD (Praised for it's stability and overall quality).

As it's been pointed out, both a PC and a Mac will get you from point A to point B. Just don't be surprised if the PC crashes, or wastes a little more of your time.

A good analogy would be comparing a Corvette to a Porche (A common comparison, and no I'm not a car person >_> ). The performance of a Corvette may be damn close to a Porche which will cost a few extra pennies. But after your corvette breaks down a few times, you'll begin to realize where those few extra pennies were spent ;) .

Also, expect the prices of macs to drop in the future. As more people begin buying macs (For many purposes: Their switch to intel [Which will probally also contribute to a drop in their prices], the popularity of the ipod, the *probable* issues with vista) the prices will drop.

My school has 25 Mac G5's (Dual core).....yesterday the thing crashed on me when i was logging in...:eek:
However, I find that Mac software is very good and simple for video/music/picture editing....but since many programs are developed for both windows and mac now, I think purchasing a Mac would just limit you by not being able to play games, upgradability, speed, and price. IF I do manage to save up some extra money in the next year I am considering buying a iMac for the sole purpose of editing, but only because I have become familiar with their software at school.

Anyway <fanboy>go mac u wnt regret it nd it pwnz windowz by far cause itz microsoft nd itz leik an open window so full of holz nd stuffz.</fanboy>

Now, excuse me while I go get a shot gun and make my head like windows for posting this.
