For Games only?

Hello
I hear a lot of stuff regarding Graphics cards are for machines you playing games on.
Well i would like to to explain this?
I mean of course a movie buff watching movies would also benefit great from such movie effects and stuff. aint it?
On what other domains, a good graphics card will help in your opinion?

Thanks

The new GPUs from Nvidia support Nvdia 3D vision which leads to playback of 3D movies.
And you would need a mid-end GPU for playback of movies on Full HD resolution.

A good GPU will help in gaming, Rendering, CAD design, HD video editing, and will make your OS "flow" better - less delays :)

On a forum like this, and just about any computer forum, you will have people discussing video cards and acting as though they are a necessary part of a computer, but they aren't. Like a sound card, network card, USB port etc, a video card is an expansion card. It lets your computer do something that it wouldn't be able to do otherwise, but isn't required at all.

A graphics card is similar to your processor, in fact it IS a processor, but it just does it slightly differently, so it is better at the tasks you give it (shading, texture filling etc). Most onboard graphics on newer motherboards now will be able to stream HD videos without a problem, so you don't need a video card to watch HD videos.

The only time the need for a graphics card arises is if you are doing anything that needs specific graphical computing power. Gaming, CAD applications, rendering etc are what I am talking about. graphics cards are also better at doing what would seem to some people as a waste of resources, such as folding, which is simulating protein folding for medical research, then uploading the results to a single place (Stanford University).

Basically if you aren't gaming, creating and rendering 3D images (so not things like photoshop, they are 2D) or doing HD video editing, you have no need for a graphics card so long as your motherboard has onboard video. Only if you are going to do one of those tasks, or your motherboard does not have onboard video will you need a graphics card

+1 the new HD graphics (built into LGA 1156/1366 socket CPUs +pentium G6950) can handle most applications fine. Plus, hence the name, they also support full HD video. Even the intel GMA X4500 should be OK for the average multimedia user :) Alternatively, get yourself a cheap Card e.g. a 5450

P.S. the reason i7's are never advertised as having "HD" integrated Graphics (Although they do) is 'cos if you've forked out tons of cash on one of them, you're likely to be a gamer or someone who requires discreet Graphics:D

Some of the IGP-Motherboards will be able to handle FullHD playback and some low end gaming.
But make sure you get an IGP-Mobo

The issue is i have to have a Graphics card even if i dont have more than 2 games on my PC and don't do allied stuff you talked about.
I am buying
Intel Core i5 750
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215&cm_re=i5_750-_-19-115-215-_-Product

and it needs a Graphics card for sure.
Now i have never bought a DISCRETE graphics card ever before
I am not sure which one to take? is that 5450 you mentioned is good for my use? (i commonly watch movies (HD also) though)

Thanks

dpends what games you rae playing.

If they are the latest and greatest and you plan on playing some of the upcoming games, you will need better than a 5450. The only use for that card is if you bought a motherboard without integrated graphics, but don't play games

Well just take it that i wont play games (dont play in past too).
But i would like the Graphics output to have MINIMUM 2 outputs (VGA +DVI) 3rd HDMi is also preferable.
I see that 5400 you mentioned is nice.
Actually here is my rig which i just decide.

Can you guys plz check and let me know your opinions.

Because it doesn't have integrated graphics, you will need a graphics card, and because you won't be gaming, a 5450 would be a good choice :)

Thanks aasti for your feedback.
Did you go through the whole rig? Does it look ok over all (if not very good)?

Also i would like to ask you about SMPS. As i knew all other components approx. I went through http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/index.jsp
and approximately (with lot of things and load) it came to 500W.
I have chosen the following SMPS after that
http://www.coolermaster.in/products/product.php?language=in&act=detail&tbcate=2259&id=5916 (costing me 75$)
Will that be ok? or even lesser wattage will do?

Also can you comment on DUAL channel issue? May be in that thread only
